• Context for the Enviro-Health Seminar

MAGIC is being implemented by a consortium of Regional Education & research networks (RENs) and National R&E networks (NRENs) around the world from 20 countries and regions, including the Caribbean.

The consortium was established to collaborate and share the advanced technology and software that will allow research, education and other knowledge-sharing resources, developed by the more developed countries, to be available and shared by less developed countries and regions, such as in the Caribbean, Africa, Central and South America.

One of the strategic objectives of MAGIC is to foster the joint work of Global Science Communities (GSC) by actively promoting collaboration. GSC’s Goal - to establish virtual Global Science Communities that enable practitioners, researchers, academics and students interact with their peers and advisors from across the globe.

Four thematic communities are Biodiversity, eHealth, Environment and Remote Instrumentation each with an advisor. The advisor for the Environment recommended merging the interests of two thematic areas – the environment and health. Climate Change has affected water (its prevalence and shortage) and other atmospheric changes that have and will continue to influence health in the region. The Enviro-Health Seminar will share current research and insights around these issues and seek to identify gaps that can benefit from the technology and software as well as identified funding proposed by the MAGIC project.

The Enviro-Health Seminar Expected Audience
- Science communities of the UWI and other higher education colleges (Barbados; others via video conference)
- Healthcare representatives of clinics, hospital, health research and teaching entities, PAHO, UNDP, Ministry of Health

Objectives:
The enviro-health seminar intends to:
• introduce the collaborative tools and platform, Colaboratorio
• share potential funding opportunities for collaborative initiatives
• present and share research findings, project initiatives on relevant climate change, water and resultant healthcare issues in the Caribbean
• stimulate greater collaboration of these communities of interest and practice through global contacts and the technological platforms and tools provided by the MAGIC project
• develop collaborative project and/or research ideas based on concerns or gaps and tailored to potential funding

Expected Outcomes:
• Caribbean enviro-health science communities introduced to similar global communities
• Documented issues/concerns and proposed institutional collaborative initiatives (using the MAGIC platform)
• Commitments of proposal development for funding of at least one (1) collaborative initiative
